Rumours around if Audi will join Formula One have been circulating for years now. However, a recent FIA meeting in April has further added fuel to the fire. Audi’s Motorsport boss has now come out and said if Audi were to join the sport, they would have to decide soon.
Audi recently pulled out of the World Endurance Championship to focus on their Formula E program. However, the VW group sent Lamborghini CEO Stefano Domenicali to a recent FIA meeting discussing the new engine regulations. These will be introduced in 2021.
In a recent interview, Motorsport boss Dieter Gass said;
“Like all other potential manufacturers, we were invited by the FIA and have discussed a possible participation. If we decide to participate in 2021, we have to decide soon.”
Audi have not ever competed in Formula One. Their only real link to the sport comes through the European Championship between 1934-1939. Under the Auto Union name, they won eight races. The highlight came in 1936. Bernd Rosemeyer won three of the four races to win the European Championship.
