Enea Bastianinin set a new lap record in a dramatic qualifying session for the Moto 3 San Marino Grand Prix at Misano.
The Estrella Galicia rider stormed to the top of the time sheets with a 1.42.147, just under two tenths faster than Jorge Martin on the #88 Honda for Del Conca Gresini. But the end of the session was marred by a big crash involving Gabriel Rodrigo and Livio Loi. Rodrigo lost control coming out of the final corner and his bike was collected by Leopard Racing’s Loi causing the Belgium rider to fly into the air and land hard. Thankfully both riders were ok and walked away under their own steam.
The former lap record was held by Brad Binder and was broken on numerous occasions during the session, originally by Fabio Di Giannantonio, team mate of Martin. Di Giannantonio will start from the second row in fifth after the frantic session. He is alongside Romano Fenati while rookie Ayumu Sasaki took seventh. That result broke a string of poor performances for the SIC Racing rider and put him just ahead of home hero Niccolo Antonelli on the KTM.
Sky Racing’s Nicolo Bulega had one lap time deleted for exceeding track limits and took tenth by the time the flag dropped to end the session just ahead of Aron Canet who had earlier had a big high side moment coming out of turn 15 but held it together and will start P11.
Current championship leader Joan Mir, team mate of Loi, starts in third place in the middle of row one and will be looking to consolidate the current 64 point lead in the riders standings and possibly add to his seven wins already this season.
The race starts at 11.00BST on Sunday. Pole sitter Bastianini will be looking to become the first rider to win from pole since Brad Binder took the win at Phillip Island last season.
