Max Coates finishes 5th and 2nd in the two rounds of Renault Clio Cup Croft weekend.
After qualifying 2nd and 5th in the two races of the Croft weekend, Max reciprocated the results in the race events. It would be Ciceley Motorsport’s best qualifying till now, thanks to Coates.
After having a positive practice sessions, getting the true pace out of the car, it was a result that was expected.
Race 1 started good for Coates as Bushell, the pole sitter made a mistake at one of the corners which allowed him to take a lead.
Although Bushell was able to regain the lead after going on the outside line at the tower.
Rowbottom then started putting Max under pressure which resulted in both the drivers tangling their car, which provided an open opportunity for team Pyro’s Nathan Harrison to take Max’s position. Hence, Coates was relegated to P3.
This demoted Coates’ confidence and hence he slipped to 6th, his final position at the flag.
In the second race, Max Coates charged straight from the start line. He quickly took the second position from PP Motorsport’s James Colburn after demoting Jim Clark Esses.
The local hero than charged towards Pyro’s Bushell for the win.
At one stage the gap between them had been close to two seconds but Coates charge at him brought him to within half a second at the flag. He got the fastest lap of the race, thereby awarding himself and the team another 2 points.
Coates said: “It’s a shame it took so long to get up to second as it allowed Mike to pull out a decent lead. But I’m still very happy and second around here for me is almost as good as a win with the noise from all the fans!”
He added, “This weekend has been great on and off the track. We had our best qualifying of the year, lead the first race and were comfortably the fastest in race two. It’s a shame to miss out on the win when we know we were the fastest but I’m pleased with 2nd place and it gives us positive momentum going into the second half of the season. We also had nearly 100 guests on Sunday and 50 on Saturday so it’s been a great weekend for all of my sponsors too.”
