Stefano Comini took his Leopard Racing Volkswagon Golf to just half a point behind championship leader James Nash with only one race left after a chaotic first encounter at Macau.
Comini immediately got the jump on teammate Jean-Karl Vernay at the start as Tiago Monteiro also passed the Frenchman in his WestCoast Racing Honda Civic for second.
However, the action came thick and fast at the first turn as Sunny Wong spun his Citroen C-Elyssee, leaving the two Linky Racing Audi A3s with nowhere to go and both running into him.
Gianni Morbidelli then ran wide at Mandarin on the unforgiving street circuit in his Honda, striking the wall, which just about sums up his season.
The red flag was eventually brought out at the mid point of lap one after James Tang collected the barriers going up the hill in his Honda, with a 15 minute stoppage to follow before racing got under way again.
The restart didn’t fair much better, with the two B3 Racing SEATs of Dusan Borkovic and Mat’o Homola attacking championship leader Nash in his similar car. Borkovic got through safely at Lisboa corner but Homola tried to follow him through, making contact with the Brit and ending both of their races.
This caused the safety car to be called out, but with the 30 minute time limit the race ended after just 5 laps, meaning just half points were awarded for the curtailed event.
A furious Comini branded the race “stupid” and collect just 12.5 of the 25 points he would have scored had the race gone more than 75%, although he is now favourite for his second title as Nash will have all the work to do from eighteenth on the grid in race two.
