A confirmation has arrived from Volkswagen that they will leave the World Rally Championship at the end of the 2016 campaign. The board of Volkswagen Motorsport met at the factory in Wolfsburg on Tuesday and came to this decision. Volkswagen has been swinging the axe on its motorsport plans as they already informed that Audi would leave WEC at the end of this year as well and move its focus to Formula E. Although Volkswagen has made plans for a 2017 Polo R rally car but it wont be used. Volkswagen’s time in World Rally Championship has been one of the most successful time period with the team winning every Driver’s and Manufacturers’ Championships since it entered the series in 2013. A peculiar time for an exit if you ask me.
Could VW plan a move to another form of motorsport or just back off from it? It remains to be seen, for now the hot questions are Sebastien Ogier’s, Jari-Matti Latvala’s and Andreas Mikkelsen’s possible seats for next year. A move to the newcomers Citroen or Toyota? Or possibly to experienced Ford M-Sport or Hyundai? No-one knows, yet anyway.
