Valteri Bottas scored a perfect P1 and helped Mercedes-AMG Petronas stay 1-2 in the second practice session.
It started with Lewis Hamilton posting the potential benchmark of the afternoon session. Hamilton posted a circuit breaking lap of 1m28.780s and ruled out the first stint of the P2 session. He then quickly improved with a 1m28.543s lap, again on the soft tyres.
Bottas started his session with medium tyres but changed to super softs for the second stint. He then answered Lewis Hamilton’s lap with a 1m28.496s, which remained unreachable for everyone throughout the session.
Ferraris responded with a much slower pace. Kimi Raikkonen was the fastest of two drivers in the final session of the day. He outpaced Sebastian Vettel by 0.128s in their Supersoft tyres run. Kimi even spun off on one occasion but survived not damaging the car.
Max Verstappen took out teammate Daniel Ricciardo claiming to be the fastest of both. The drivers occupied P5 and P6 in the time sheet.
Nico Hulkenberg impressed the Renault Sport F1 garage by taking the seventh spot. He was followed by Felipe Massa in Williams, an impressive Fernando Alonso and the Force India rookie driver Esteban Ocon. They completed the top 10.
