Daniel Abt has taken his first career win in the FIA Formula E Championship in yet another dramatic Hong Kong E-Prix.
the start was delayed due to a problem with the light gantry, and after almost 10 minutes of sitting on the grid, the race got underway behind the Safety Car. Seconds after the Safety Car retreated, pole sitter and then race leader Felix Rosenqvist spun at Turn 1, going down to eleventh on track, and handing the lead to rookie Edoardo Mortara.
There were battle all throughout the field, including the recovering cars of Sebastien Buemi, after crashing in qualifying, and Sam Bird, after a 10 place penalty. There was a good scrap for fourth between Da Costa and Bird’s teammate Alex Lynn, however Da Costa lost time during the pit stops, and was only able to finish twelfth.
Podium finisher yesterday, Nick Heidfeld ran into trouble early on and went a lap down, however during the latter half of the race he was all over the race leader Mortara, who let him through eventually. However with just three laps to go, Mortara spun out at turn 2 and dropped to third. This left Abt out in front to win the race with a recovering Rosenqvist coming home to take second, from Mortara in third.
Evans finished in fourth ahead of Vergne and yesterday’s race winner Sam Bird. Oliver Turvey finished seventh for NIO and the top ten was rounded out by Engel, Prost and Lynn.
This means that Daniel Abt is now the championship leader, just three point ahead of Sam Bird, who is two points ahead of Jean-Eric Vergne. It was a tragic weekend for the two championship contenders, of Season Two and Three, as Buemi finished eleventh on both days, and Di Grassi had a best finish of 15th in today’s race.
The Next Race happens in the New Year, on 13th January in Marrakesch.
