Felipe Massa topped day one of the second pre-season testing in the FW40 Williams, the Brazilian set a 1:19.726 on the supersoft tyres.
Massa came out of retirement after Valtteri Bottas joined Mercedes and showed he has not lost his speed even at the ripe age of 35.
Daniel Ricciardo was only two tenths behind the Brazilian, the Red Bull Racing driver set the time on the ultrasoft tyres. Ricciardo produced 89 laps in the RB13 and still showed excellent pace on a qualifying lap.
Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel rounded out the top three, with all three drivers finishing under the one minute 20 seconds’ time. The German continue to show an impressive pace, after a great first week in the SF70H. The most impressive part of day one was that Vettel was only three tenths of the pace on the slower soft tyres.
Mercedes split the drivers between morning and afternoon, Lewis Hamilton drove in the morning but struggled to find the pace they found in the first week. Valtteri Bottas finished half a second of his teammate as Mercedes focused on the long run pace on the soft tyres.
Force India debutant Esteban Ocon finished sixth, while Nico Hulkenberg, Kevin Magnussen and Daniil Kvyat were only separated by two tenths.
McLaren Honda had a disastrous day after they were forced to change their engine after an electrical problem. Stoffel Vandoorne still managed 80 laps and set the tenth fastest lap on the soft tyres.
Pascal Wehrlein drove the Sauber for the first time finishing three tenths faster than his more experienced teammate Marcus Ericsson. Jolyon Palmer rounded out the times in the Renault but still have confidence the French manufacturer can make a competitive car.
