The washed out Free Practice session didn’t allow teams to experiment much in order to cement a race strategy at the Suzuka Circuit.
Heavy rain pour delayed the second session of the day. Half of the 90 minutes session was suspended and as 45 minutes remained on the clock, only 5 cars timed a legal lap.
The Ferrari Finn Kimi Raikkonen took his prancing horse out for completing an installation lap.
Renault’s Nico Hulkenberg and Jolyon Palmer followed him and returned to the pits after a sighting lap on full wets.
Force India were the first ones to send their drivers out for a legal lap with Sergio Perez completing the stint with a 1m51.345s, which was then improved by teammate Ocon with a 1m49.518s lap.
Lewis Hamilton took the second step on track and went a lap extra then the Force Indias to come on top with a 1m48.719s lap.
Mercedes powered Williams came out too with Massa and Stroll contesting 4th and 5th effectively. All the other cars remained in the garages to keep their wets in shape!
Bottas who received a 5-place grid penalty didn’t participate outside on the track.
