Launch of the Mercedes W08

Today marked one of the most anticipated 2017 car releases as Mercedes unveiled their new challenger at Silverstone. The car was officially unveiled at 12:30pm GMT on a twitter launch.

This morning, however, images of the car were revealed as Lewis Hamilton took the new Mercedes around Silverstone for a pre-arranged filming day. The car was rumoured to have a rear fin added over the engine cover before the release, as can be seen on the Sauber and Renault 2017 cars, but the release images still show the car without this fin.

After having completed a few laps in the new car, Hamilton appeared excited about this year’s prospects: “It is so exciting to see this thing coming together. From working in the windtunnel, then having this jig which is into real carbon fibre, you see it all come together, do the seat fitting over the winter and in the last few days seeing it all appearing, somehow they all just slot in perfectly.

“Driving today, naturally the car feels wider, which it is, and the front tyres feel huge. There is quite a lot of grip already even in the cold conditions here.”

Both Hamilton and his new teammate Valtteri Bottas will be partaking in the pre-season test being conducted at Barcelona next week. It will be the first time all the cars will be on grid together and will give the first hints at who could be the car to watch this season.

A big regulation change has come into play this year, putting a lot more stress on the aerodynamics of the cars. The lower rear wing gives the cars an early 2000s feel, hopefully encouraging closer wheel-to-wheel racing this season.

The Mercedes W08 is the first car to not present a ‘toe’ front nose. The smooth curve of the front nose shows a different way of attacking the new regulations. Along with Mercedes neglecting to add the fin over the engine cover, like Williams, the Mercedes W08 quite different from the four other cars that have been unveiled already. This car shows the closest resemblance to the 2016 field so far.

Bottas gave some comments after unveiling the car with his new teammate. Only Hamilton drove the W08 in the filming day today, with Bottas due to set some laps later on this afternoon. Since joining Formula One, Bottas has only driven for Mercedes. The Finn is highly anticipating his new venture in a new team.

“It is a big day for me,” Bottas said after unveiling the W08. “Driving a Silver Arrow for the first time is something very special. I have been waiting for this moment for quite a while and also for the test for a long time. What I really like about this is how

“What I really like about this is how clean it looks, but there is a massive amount of detail on the rear end and bargeboards – development has been done – and how far everything has been taken with this car. It looks cool.”

Mercedes are conduction QandA sessions with their drivers and team principal Toto Wolff throughout the afternoon on their Twitter page @MercedesAMGF1 whilst they complete their filming day and their final shakedown of the W08 before it heads out on track for the official test days in the next two weeks.

Tomorrow marks a big day as both McLaren and Ferrari release their challengers for the 2017 season. But the real question still remains to be answered: can anyone beat Mercedes this year?
