Huge rainstorms cause mayhem at Monza ahead of qualifying for this weekends Italian Grand Prix. The weather had already caused a cancellation to GP3 qualifying and the final practice session for the Formula One guys was delayed so much that only 16 minutes of running was possible.
During this short time only seven cars set a lap with only the Williams, Toro Ross’s, Renault and the one Sauber of Marcus Ericsson taking to the sodden track. For most the session was a chance to look over data and relax before qualifying later this afternoon, weather dependent of course.
On the track Felipe Massa set the fastest lap ahead of team mate Lance Stroll with the Brazilian’s 1.40.660 a quarter of a second faster than his rookie team mate. Hulkenberg and Sainz were third and fourth, around eight tenths down on the Grove based team while Palmer, Ericsson, and Kvyat set times that were almost four seconds slower than Massa.
Most stayed in the garage as with a short session time and no rain due tomorrow for the race making wholesale changes to the set up would be pointless for most. Also most teams did not want to risk the cars as on the initial runs even the safety car was aqua planning around the track. In the dry sessions yesterday Mercedes topped both sessions with Hamilton and Bottas sharing top spot over the two sessions.
The rain is expected to ease as the day goes on so most are expecting qualifying to take place however it is unsure just now if it will be at 1pm BST or if it will be delayed to allow the track conditions time to ease up.
