Ducati’s Marco Melandri enjoyed a rather successful day at the Motorland Aragon Circuit, finishing a creditable second in the race, with this being the Italian’s best result of the 2017 World Superbike season.
Despite starting from the second row, Melandri stormed off the line and was soon into third place by the end of lap one. However cool tyres kept the Ducati rider from making progress into the leaders early on, but he soon developed into a strong rhythm which matched with Chaz Davies and Jonathan Rea out front.
With teammate Davies tucking the front end on the penultimate lap, Melandri was gifted the second spot on the podium.
“It was a difficult race for us,” explained Melandri. “We were expecting warmer conditions which would have allowed me to use the softer rear tyre, the grip level was also very different to yesterday which meant I struggled a lot.”
“Personally I struggled with the front, I opted for the new development SC1 solution because I really liked it during practice, I expected it to react in a different way.”
“I lacked grip at maximum lean angle, and early on it was very difficult for me to close my line into the fast corners.”
“Tomorrow is another day and me and the team will try to improve as each race carries a different story”.
