Nissan have confirmed their entry into the FIA Formula E series, they will be starting in the 2018/19 season.
The Japanese manufacturer (the first so far), confirmed at the Tokyo Motor Show on Wednesday, in place of an existing team, it was widely speculated that it would be Renault who dropped out. It seems these reports were correct, since both teams are part of the same motorsport group. Although Renault’s departure has not been confirmed, it’s believed, this will follow shortly, freeing them up to concentrate on their Formula 1 team.
Nissan has been a big player in the electric vehicle market, with the LEAF being the best selling EV globally, so this makes sense in terms of their strategy going forward.
Daniele Schillaci, executive vice president of global marketing and sales said:
Essentially is seems like part of a larger marketing ploy to promote their road products for the future, but any new entrants, especially a brand with such racing history, are welcome.
