It’s time to take the wraps off the new equipment, the 2017 unveils have begun. Both the new Porsche 919 Hybrid and Toyota TS050 were revealed Friday ahead of the WEC Prologue weekend at Monza. Many onlookers at the track, and fans on their twitter feeds were eager to get a glimpse of the cars.
Ultimately, there is no real surprise to the appearance of the 2017 LMP1’s. Porsche, keeping with tradition, maintain a livery identical to the 911 RSR’s which debuted in IMSA at the 24 Hours of Daytona. Meanwhile Toyota return the essentially the same scheme from their 2016 car. Fans craving a more diverse look to the prototype grid were left disappointed.
Keen eyes were focused on the new Porsche whose noticeably absent review mirrors from spy shots last weekend sparked many conversations and speculations. Interesting side pods and larger headlights, although not as hotly debated, undoubtedly will have at least an equal impact to the cars performance relative to mirror location or lack thereof.
Toyota appear to have taken some queues from Audi in the aerodynamic design of their nose. Otherwise the car outwardly seems to lack any significant changes.
Of note, it was recently announced both Porsche and Toyota have agreed to maintain the same monocoque designs through 2019. The teams have reached this agreement, presumably, as a self-imposed cost control effort.
The cars take the track tomorrow, Saturday the 1st (no joke!) for the first time competing against one another. All eyes will be on the timing and scoring sheets to see who has the advantage heading into the season. Just fourteen days left until the kickoff event at Six of Hours of Silverstone. Let’s get ready to go racing!
