Lexus continued to top the GT500 time sheets at Okayama, as Honda outpaced Nissan yet again, while the VivaC Toyota 86 and the NDDP Nissan yet again prevailed in GT300.
However it was far from a perfect day for Lexus, as while their LC500s showed no lack of pace, reliability was an issue. Both the WedsSport and Wako’s entries stopped on track during the morning, while Yuji Tachikawa even had an accident in the red-flag filled afternoon session. The day proved to be a little slower than Saturday, with the quickest time 2 tenths off what it was yesterday.
However, it was the Red Bull sponsored KeePer TOM’s Lexus which prevailed yet again while being driven by Nick Cassidy, topping the morning session, and in the end the whole day with a time of 1:18.395. This was narrowly quicker (0.025s) than the time the Zent Cerumo car set in the afternoon, although the KeePer TOM’s crew will be undoubtedly happier, mostly because the Zent Car’s day ended rather abruptly in the barrier. Honda then had two cars third and fourth, in the overall standing for the day, with the Keihin Honda yet again proving to be the quickest Honda.
It appeared to be another difficult session for Nissan who failed to set a time within the 1:18s. However, it appears that Nissan weren’t looking for quick lap times as there was little sign of unhappy drivers. Yet again the Kondo Racing Forum engineering car driven was quickest, setting the 9th quickest time of the day.
In GT300 the VivaC Toyota ended top by almost 2 tenths, which for the standards of this test is an enormous margin! Kenta Yamashita was able to set an unofficial lap record of 1:25.529 in the morning, which proved to be untouchable. The Subaru BRZ of R&D sport and the NDDP B-Max Nissan finished second and third respectively, with both cars having very promising and productive days of testing. Apart from that trio, no other GT300 team was able to set consistently good times in both sessions. It wasn’t a good session for everyone, with the Saitama Toyopet Greenbrave Toyota Mark X MC stopping on track more than once during the afternoon, while the Taisan SARD Audi R8 LMS had a shunt in the hands of Shinnosuke Yamada.
During the day Safety Car Practice and Start Practice was also held.
The second weekend of testing is held at Fuji Speedway on the 25th and 26th of march.
