WSR have announced that two-time British Touring Car Champion Colin Turkington would return to the team after two seasons away at Team BMR. The Northern Irishman has enjoyed huge success with the BMW outfit in the past as his connections with them date back to his debut season in 2002 and has raced for 9 seasons with the team over three separate stints.
This huge success amounts to 30 race victories, a further 86 podium finishes, eight Independents’ crowns and two outright Driver’s Championships, won in 2009 and 2014, which was also made into a team double. All this ensures that the Turkington, WSR partnership is one of the most successful in the history in the BTCC.
Furthermore, Turkington has also raced with WSR in the WTCC, contesting selective rounds between 2007 and 2012 in a BMW 320si, achieving a podium on his debut and a race victory in 2010 and Okayama, Japan.
“It feels fantastic to re-join WSR for the 2017 season and I couldn’t be more excited about my return” said Turkington. He continued to say “From my debut in touring cars in 2002 right through to winning my second BTCC title, it’s been like a second home for me and my greatest achievements in motor racing have all come with them”
Dick Bennetts, Team Principal of WSR, added, “There’s definitely a sense of unfinished business as, despite our intentions, commercial reasons meant we weren’t able to stay together to defend our championships. We now head into 2017 with a very strong driver line-up, and we’re aiming for more titles”
Turkington joins 2013 BTCC Champion Andrew Jordan for the coming season which is proving to be one of the most formidable driver line ups on the grid and boasts 57 BTCC wins, 163 podiums and three Driver’s titles between them. An announcement on WSR’s third driver is expected soon.
