Vettel on top in final practice

Sebastian Vettel took top spot in FP3 session today ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix tomorrow with team mate Kimi Raikkonen second.

The Scuderia have looked promising all weekend and have been top three in all sessions so far this weekend. The four time World Champion topped the session with a 1.12.5725 lap on the ultra soft tyres, three tenths faster than Raikkonen and championship rival Lewis Hamilton.

The Mercedes duo of Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas struggled to match the pace on the ultra soft tyres but will be encouraged by the pace on the super softs in comparison to its rivals with both drivers less than a second behind Vettel fastest lap even with the slower tyre.

Red Bull enjoyed a trouble free session after all the engine issues that blighted the start to their week with Max Verstappen also in the 1.12 bracket, one of only four men to do so in the session. In doing so he also split the Mercedes with Bottas fifth while Nico Hulkenberg stuck his Renault in between the Red Bull’s for sixth with Daniel Ricciardo, a former Canadian GP winner, seventh.

“We are going in the right direction, particularly Max who is pretty competitive,” said Red Bull boss Christian Horner. “Within a tenth of Bottas and three tenths off Hamilton is not bad at all.”

Fernando Alonso managed to last a full session with no break downs after having another calamity from Honda yesterday. The Spaniard return the reliability with P12, running in the top ten at one point before the end of session flurry.

Further down the field the two Sauber’s finished at the back, propping up the time sheets in P19 and P20. Lance Stroll, local hero in his first home race, just ahead of them in P18.

Ferrari would seem to have the edge going into qualifying at 6pm UK time today but could Mercedes or even Red Bull upset the apple cart?
