What’s going on?
Today the magazine Autosport alongside other motorsport magazines wrote that Volkswagen would quit the WRC at the end of 2016 season. The German car manufacturer is leading and has won the manufacturers’ championship yet again this season. Their number one driver Sebastien Ogier has already ensured the drivers’ championship before the last rally of the season in Australia. It has been quite the domination for Volkswagen Motorport this last few years but now the joy seems to have met an end.
Now Volkswagen hasn’t yet confirmed anything regarding this or next season overall but the news seem to have come from reliable sources. This exit sets the drivers’ market for next year into a blaze with Sebastien Ogier, Jari-Matti Latvala and Andreas Mikkelsen becoming free agents. We shouldn’t still be worried about the quality of racing next year as two car manufacturer giants, Citroen and Toyota make a return and Hyundai and Ford M-Sport still remain for next season.
The possible new Citroen and Toyota rally cars for next season
Perhaps Latvala might end up at Toyota as the legendary Finn Tommi Mäkinen will take leading role at the Japanese team. One thing that is obvious is that the speculation for next year’s power balance with cars and drivers will pick up wind when Volkswagen Motorsport make their exit official. What remains to be seen is where Sebastien Ogier will end up, as he will no doubt have the upper hand being a multi-time World Champion. There will be a seat open for him on every team so it will be his choice, 100 per cent.
