According to sources, Sauber have agreed a deal with Pascal Wehrlein for the free seat at the team in 2017. Wehrlein will take his place alongside, his new teammate, Marcus Ericsson.
Wehrlein was in line for a Mercedes seat but also a Williams seat at one point. Now both of those seats are taken, Wehrlein will be moving to Sauber this year.
After much discussion about who will be the next Mercedes driver it is now clear that Wehrlein’s move to Sauber has confirmed Valterri Bottas’ place at the Silver Arrows this year alongside three-time world champion, Lewis Hamilton. The team thought it would be risky to promote Wehrlein to the top as he lacked experience as he has been in a Manor for two seasons.
Now there are two free seats at Manor for this season. Esteban Gutierrez is the favourite to take a seat. Others in contention are Felipe Nasr and Rio Haryanto.
Mercedes have agreed a deal with Sauber over their junior driver, according to sources, and everything should be completed and confirmed in the next couple of days.
