Matevos Isaakyan took advantage of average starts from the drivers around him to scoop up a thoroughly comfortable victory in the first race of the weekend at the Nurburgring, while Pietro Fittipaldi and surprise debutant pole man Alex Palou collided in what was an uneventful race otherwise. Again Fittipaldi though found himself in an incident at the start, and needs to be careful these continuous issues do not derail his title challenge. In reality on this occasion it was probably Palou’s fault, breaking slightly too late and hitting Fittipaldi.
Somewhat amazingly, the top ten after lap one finished in those exact places by the end, and the remaining podium spots went to Alfonso Celis, maintaining his consistent season, and Egor Orudzhev taking third. Unfortunately the lack of change does ultimately tell the lack of action today, with no real close battles on track and sizable gaps making racing tough.
Race 2 is tomorrow morning and will hopefully be a more lively affair.
