Daniel Abt topped the final practise session of the Marrakesh EPrix setting an astounding time of 1:19.760, just over a tenth quicker than teammate Lucas Di Grassi with Sebastien Buemi close behind in third.
The session started under foggy conditions, and as the session progressed the fog got heavier, however it was still safe enough to run the cars. The session was action packed as cars kept going faster, the drivers kept making minor incidents, including a heroic save from Andretti’s Antonio Felix da Costa.
Jaguar’s Mitch Evans just missed out on a sub 1:20 lap time, finishing fourth ahead of teammate Piquet, and the DS Virgin of Alex Lynn. Jose Maria Lopez did an amazing job to finish seventh in only his second session of the season, ahead of 2016 pole sitter Felix Rosenqvist, and the Techeetahs of Jean Eric Vergne and Andre Lotterer rounding out the top ten.
NIO’s Oliver Turvey just missed out on the top ten ahead of Venturi’s Edoara Mortara and championship leader Sam Bird. The two Andretti’s of Antonio Felix da Costa and Tom Blomqvist rounded out the top 15, but were still within nine thenths of a second of pacesetter Abt’s time.
Nico Prost struggled in his Renault to 16th position ahead of Maro Engel and Mahindra’s Nick Heidfeld. Jerome D’Ambrosio went from second fastest in FP1 to second last in Practice 2 only just beating the NIO of Luca Fillipi.
With the field so tightly packed, qualifying will be quite a spectacle, which starts at 12:00UTC.
