Lewis Hamilton was fastest in FP1 for Mercedes, Hamilton set a time of 1:24.220.
Hamilton and new teammate Valterri Bottas completed a Mercedes 1 – 2 in the session but they were the only drivers to set their quickest laps on the Purple Ultra Soft tyres.
Daniel Ricciardo was third with teammate Max Verstappen fourth, the Red Bulls looking good over one lap on the supersofts.
The increase of speed in the new cars was very easy to notice, they were taking corners flat out and Hamilton’s fastest time in this session was over 5 seconds quicker than the fastest FP1 time in 2016.
Behind came the two Ferrari’s of Raikkonen and Vettel who didn’t do as much laps as others in the session and the driver’s did not seem to be pushing their cars as hard as other drivers were.
McLaren had a decent session with Fernando Alonso in 14th with the McLaren not having any significant problems, this will give both McLaren and Honda some confidence going into FP2 later on today.
With the new cars already lapping at 1:24’s, this afternoon’s FP2 session is going to be fascinating to watch as the team’s will explore more of the limits of their cars, expect the laptimes to be much quicker this afternoon!
