Championship leader Pagenaud takes pole at Sonoma!

Championship leader, Simon Pagenaud moves closer to taking victory after leading a Team Penske 1, 2, 3 and 4 in qualifying.

The Frenchman set a lap time of 1:16.2565 in the Fast Six shootout.

Will Power qualified 4th just 0.4094 off pace, with Hélio Castroneves and Juan Pablo Montoya standing between the two Astor Cup contenders.

Texas winner, Graham Rahal will start 5th for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing. Rahal qualified the best of the Honda-powered entries, which also saw Ryan Hunter-Reay make it through to the Fast Six shootout on Saturday for Andretti Autosport.

Last year’s Champion, Scott Dixon will start 7th alongside Andretti Herta Autosport’s Alexander Rossi. Rossi, Indy 500 winner and a former Formula 1 driver for Manor is rumoured to be in the running to take Montoya’s seat at Penske.

The GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma is the final round on the sixteen track schedule and will take place at 2:40 a.m. BST.

After claiming 1 point for pole, Pagenaud now leads team mate Power by 43 points, however both driver’s would do well to remember last season’s finale, where championship leader Montoya led 3rd placed Dixon by 47 points only for Dixon to come out on top. With double points on offer it is still all to play for on Sunday.
