Season 3 champion, Lucas Di Grassi set a new lap record on his way to topping the first practice session ahead of this afternoon’s Marrakesh EPrix.
The Brazilian set a 1:20.310 which is a full 1.2 seconds faster than Felix Rosenqvist’s pole set in November 2016. Di Grassi was one of two to set a lap at the full 200 kilowatts of power, with the other being Dragon’s Jerome D’Ambrosio, who finished second, but was a full nine tenths behind The Audi Sport Abt Schaeffler driver.
Di Grassi’s teammate, Daniel Abt finished third ahead of the Jaguar of Mitch Evans, with Sebastian Buemi rounding out the top 5. Championship leader Sam Bird finished sixth, with his closest rival Jean Eric Vergne finishing just behind in seventh. Nelson Piquet Jr finished eighth, Felix Rosenqvist finished ninth with NIO’s Oliver Turvey rounding out the top ten.
Andre Lotterer finished eleventh ahead of Alex Lynn with Jose Maria Lopez making his return to the series finishing in 13th. Nico Prost finished 14th ahead of Mahindra’s Nick Heidfeld and Antonio Felix da Costa finshed 16th.
There were multiple issues for Venturi in the opening session, stopping on track no fewer than seven times, and their drivers Maro Engel and Edoardo Mortara, who almost won in Hong Kong, finished 17th and 20th in the session. In between them were NIO’s Luca Fillipi and Andretti’s Tom Blomqvist, who makes his Formula E debut this weekend, replacing Kamui Kobayashi.
