16 year old Luca Engstler has taken pole position in the inaugural TCR Middle East series opener in Dubai at the wheel of one of his father’s five Engstler Motorsport Volkswagon Golfs.
Making his TCR debut this weekend the extremely talented youngster set the pace in both practice sessions this morning (Thursday) and then managed to put in an incredible lap in qualifying to go half a second clear of TCR International Series regular and teammate Mat’o Homola.
American Brandon Gdovic made it an Engstler 1-2-3 on the grid ahead of the much improved Alfa Romeo Guilietta of Mulsanne Racing’s Michela Cerruti, closely followed by another much improved car, that of Luigi Ferrara’s Top Run Motorsport Subaru WRX STI.
Filip Sladecka made it four out of five VWs in the top six, not wuite able to match his teammate’s pace as he adapts to the Engstler TCR car.
Also adapting were James Kaye in the new Audi RS3 LMS and Kane Astin who was a late replacement for Rik Breukers in the Red Camel-Jordans.nl SEAT Leon. Both this team and Kaye’s CadSpeed Audi squad are more used to running in the 24hr series so had to deal with the differing ride height and weight distribution issues.
Kaye lines up seventh with Astin just behind him in eighth as the pair look to improve their set up work for the races.
