Remember the good old days of a British champion in a British car……..that was 9 years ago now since we had that combination with Button and Brawn GP. Wouldn’t it be nice to have that again?
With the latest rumours going around, it’s possible that if contract talks at Mercedes don’t go Hamilton’s way and McLaren get their act together with the Renault power train they’re running in the back of their car this season, who knows what we might see in 2019.
McLaren boss, Zak Brown, has openly said that if the contract extension with Mercedes falls through, Hamilton would be welcomed back to the Surrey based team, where his whole F1 journey started. All this interest has started peaking because of the delays in the contract talks between Hamilton and Mercedes.
Zak Brown also said that any team would be “foolish” not to secure Hamilton’s services for 2019 and beyond. However, Mercedes boss Toto Wolff did say that Hamilton extending his contract was only a “matter of time”.
Furthermore, if Renault don’t do enough for Alonso this season, Fernando could be off to the WEC and endurance racing full-time from 2019 onwards. If Hamilton sees something in McLaren like he saw in Mercedes for 2013, we could have an all British pairing at McLaren by 2020 with McLaren development driver and young Brit, Lando Norris stepping up to the full-time seat alongside Hamilton, which seems to be only a matter of time after he competed alongside Alonso at the Daytona 24H, now THAT would be a combination to behold.
