Timo Bernhard has confirmed that his KÜS Team75 Bernhard squad will enter a Porsche 911 GT3R at Spa in the pro cup. What really makes this car a mouth-watering prospect is the fact it will be driven by a trio of platinum-rated, fully-fledged Porsche factory drivers: Micheal Christensen, Laurens Vanthoor and Kevin Estre.
KÜS Team75 Bernhard are owned by the Bernhard family and primarily compete in the Porsche Carrera Cup Germany. More recent, and very successful, forays into the VLN and ADAC GT Masters have clearly persuaded Timo Bernhard, Porsche LMP1 driver and team owner, into launching an ambitious effort for Spa.
The driver lineup cleans up any doubts as to at what end of the field this car would be racing. Until he moved to Porsche last year no one was better in a GT3 car than Laurens Vanthoor. He was a specialist both at Blancpain in general and at Spa as well. Of course, he is not yet entirely familiar with the Porsche, but slow for Vanthoor standards is fast compared to most drivers. Estre also made a name for himself in Blancpain GT. He is a slightly less circumspect driver than Vanthoor, and he quickly became known for excellent racecraft and just generally being outrageously rapid. Christensen is just as good, having no lack of experience in Porsches. He has been impressive this year, particularly with his scintillating late charge to victory at Daytona.
Bernhard insists despite the prospects of victory this year will be a learning year. “We want to learn as much as possible, deliver a clean race and see the chequered flag,” said Bernhard. “I’m very proud of our achievements to date. It was always our goal to race in the endurance category and with Spa we will make our debut at one of the classic venues.”
Vanthoor, rarely an outspoken person, seems rather more ambitious. “It’s the first 24-hour race for KÜS Team75 Bernhard, but I like the idea of a small team, where everyone is fully motivated and works closely together. We will be up against experienced works teams but I’m confident we can fight for victory.“
I personally think that Vanthoor is providing the more accurate impression, as KÜS Team75 Bernhard will inevitably get support from Porsche. Watch out for this car on race day.
