Can Mike Bushell turn his success so far this year into a record breaking season?
It is perfectly possible for Mike to win the championship this weekend. It would require two race wins, but having done the double at both previous circuits, Snetterton and Croft, his form is there and Mike likes nothing better than a challenge.
The only other person to win the Clio Cup championship at Rockingham was Dave Newsham back in 2010 and in the same season he also won the highest points haul overall and the highest number of race wins.
At the moment, Mike Bushell is in the position to break all of those records. His enviable qualifying ability could also see him take Jonathan Adam’s 2005 pole start record should he complete the season starting on pole for each race.
After winning the Clio Cup championship in 2014, Mike Bushell jumped into the AMD Ford Focus in the BTCC in 2015 only to suffer a major crash at Thruxton and in 2016 back in the Clio Cup he missed out on the championship in the final race of the season to Ant Whorton-Eales.
Could 2017 be the year when Mike gets his luck back and shows what he is capable of?
Paul Rivett and Lee Pattison will do their best to stop Mike running away with the title so early, but at 98 points in the lead he’s going to take a lot to beat. Max Coates could also cause upset and mix things up in the battle for points, he proved how much pace he has at Snetterton.
Rockingham is sure to produce some nail biting racing and I for one will not be looking away for a second. Will we see a champion crowned or will we have to wait until the end of the season? All I can guarantee is you will see some excellent racing from a close pack of talented drivers.
