Aidan Moffat has today announced that his partnership with Laser Tools Racing will continue in 2018, once again running with the Mercedes A-Class, which brought the Scottish youngster his first two victories in the 2017 season. This comes after much speculation and rumours that Moffat would be the one chosen to replace fellow Scot Gordon Shedden at Honda Yuasa Racing, however those rumours were put to bed with the announcement of former Porsche Carrera Cup GB Champion Dan Cammish taking the seat for 2018. This also confirms that will be three A-Class’ on the grid for 2018, with Moffat’ s Laser Tools machine joining the Two Ciceley Motorsport machines of Adam Morgan, who put the A-Class on the map in BTCC, having had 4 victories with the Mercedes. As well as Morgan’s new teammate Tom Oliphant, who steps into the BTCC for the first time, after successful seasons in the Ginetta GT4 Supercup and Porsche Carrera Cup GB. Moffat began his touring car career in 2014 with the Laser Tools team, and both he and the team have come on leaps and bounds since, taking two victories and numerous top ten finishes. However, they have often lacked the consistency to last in and around the top 10 for full seasons, so has never been a strong title challenger, and the team will be working hard to rectify that in 2018.
Speaking to BTCC.net, Moffat said:
“The BTCC is where we’re going to stay, It’s a fantastic championship and as a team we’re constantly improving.
“We’ve also made headway with our Mercedes over the course of 2017 and we’ve got a lot of development planned before the 2018 season starts. We’ve particularly been looking at the car’s aerodynamics and we’ve made some bodywork modifications that we feel could give us quite a significant performance benefit.
“Saying that, through the closing rounds at Brands Hatch, the car felt very good indeed. I had great pace and I could place it wherever I wanted. I’m very confident in what’s underneath me and feel that we’re in a great position.”
“I’ve really enjoyed my time in the BTCC so far. It’s my fifth season now and that second win at the end of last year was a just reward for everyone involved,”
“The BTCC is unique — there’s no other championship in the world that’s as closely contested and every success is a terrific achievement for all of the team.
