Vinales takes pole, but all eyes on Rossi

Maverick Vinales has taken pole in Mugello, but all eyes are falling to his team mate Valentino Rossi. Rossi hasn’t won at his home track since 2008, and is out this weekend to change that. He is still suffering with chest pain after he spent the night in hospital as a result of a Motocross accident. But the Italian was determined to race in front of his home crowd, whether in pain or not.

Of course, we had to go through Q1 first, where we saw Johann Zarco and Danilo Petrucci advance through to Q2. Zarco left it late to leave the pits, but managed to put in numerous fast laps to see him through. His late exit from pit lane seemed tactical and it worked, as he had saved himself an extra tyre for Q2.

Into Q2, and the fast laps were rolling in. Looking undoubtedly strong was Pramac’s Danilo Petrucci, who put in several fastest laps and sat in provisional pole for quite some time. But as we all know, the closing minutes are the ones that really count. As fast lap after fast lap flew in, Maverick Vinales was the one who bested the rest of the field. Team mate Rossi was clearly unfazed by his FP4 crash, and stuck it in 2nd, putting him on the front row for his home race. Ducati’s Andrea Dovizioso will round out the front row, starting from 3rd from tomorrow’s race.
